Why are we scared ?

Tonight I witnessed a remarkable event in Perth. At a community gathering to discuss a recent spate of anti-semitism within the Perth Jewish community and abroad I saw people mouth off and sprout opinions without having a clue as to what they were talking about.

First we get the guy complaining about a lack of support for a protest held on shabbos – go figure why Jews would not be protesting on shabbos ?

Second we get the lady telling us she is scared about recent events. What is there to be scared about. Jews have seen off every evil empire that us tried to attack us. Though a high price has been in some cases we are still around as a nation, people and religion. The same can not be said off the Ancient Egyptians, Phoenician Empire, Canaanites, Philistines, Assyrian Empire, Babylonian Empire, Persian Empire, Greek Empire, Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, Spanish Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ottoman Empire, Nazi Germany. What makes you think Iran has any real chance of success in its endeavours ?

Thirdly we have another guy standup and issue a call to action to start his new advocacy group called “Friends of  Israel”. Do we need more community organisations competing for scarce community resources. How about we support what exists and get on with the job.

Perhaps people are scared because they are uneducated and need to understand more about their heritage.
Perhaps people need to start more community advocacy organisations to fulfill their egotistic desires.
Perhaps we should just get educated get moving and be proud Jews.
