There are no formal singles clubs. There have been some recent attempts to create some social networks, but nothing much has eventuated. This is the biggest gaps we have in the community. The best group to contact would be Hagshama, who are contactable through the State Zionist Council at the Jewish Centre. David Goldberger is the Shaliach.

Thanks for your posting.
I consulted three books to see if I could find references, but was unsuccessful. The books were the Perth Hebrew Congregation Centenary Issue of the Australian Jewish Historical Society Journal, Life is a Corridor, by Rabbi Shalom Coleman, and The Perth Hebrew Congregation 1892-2002.
There was at one stage a large number of yiddish speaking immigrants to Perth, and I believe a number of community immigrants with a sepharidi tradition. A group broke from the community to form the Perth Jewish Association in 1907 and even established their own synagogue. There are even Rabbinic responsa on record regarding the halachic differences between the two shules, with tshuvot on record at Mossad Harav Kook.
The Jewish Historical and Geneaology Society has a lot of historic information and may be worth approaching with your enquiry. Their email address is jhgs@iinet.net.au

I am an Israeli-born American-raised expatriate in Singapore expecting a baby boy in a couple of months. We don’t have a mohel in Singapore, and the nearest place I know with mohelim is Australia. So I am researching if and how we can arrange for a mohel to come to Singapore for the brit milah.

I can provide you with contacts for a mohel. can you please advise if the intended surgery is for an expected baby boy, or if an adult is involved (ie – an operation). Also, it is important to know if the person is Jewish or not as there is are differences between a brit milah and a standard circumcision. One is a religious ceremony, the other a medical procedure, and the motivations and reasons for undertaking either would sometimes differ.

I grew up in New York and moved here 10 years ago and know almost no one here who is Jewish. Because I am not religious I haven’t joined any of the shules, but I do identify with my background culturally and it might be nice to meet other people who are Jewish in a non-religious context. Are there lectures or film festivals around that I could look into? I took my kids to a Channukah fete a couple of years ago, but except for a few things on sale such as dreidls it was pretty much like any other Perth fete, even including a sausage sizzle! I guess I was hoping for some other food, like knishes or bagels and lox (I know my NY background is showing). Also, do you know if there is any place where I can get fresh chopped liver (short of making it myself)? Thank you.

Hi Marianne,
Perth has quite a large secular Jewish community. The majority of Perth’s 8,000 odd Jews are not regular Shule attendees.
However you will find the best events are run through the Shules. Channukah picnics at PHC, for example, will have latkes and bagels are a staple at almost any PHC event.
There are other secular groups, such as WIZO, the State Zionist Council, etc and these often have get togethers, Israeli movie nights, etc. The Maccabean newspaper is probably a good place to find out about such events.
Finally, the Kosher Food Centre will certainly have chopped liver, lox (or bagels, cream cheese and salmon sold separately anyway).

BTW, I tried the chopped liver at the Kosher Food Centre but it was shipped frozen from Melbourne and didn’t quite do it for me — maybe because it had been frozen, but it could be because my grandmother always made it with chicken livers and I think this was beef…

In April, I went to the sedar in North Fremantle and was amazed at the jewish community. I really enjoyed my time with the people there and I was hoping that some of those people would be doing something in Fremantle for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I’m unsure if chabad are hosting any yomtov services in Fremantle. You could ask them – email admin@chabadwa.org or link to their website from our page.
The other option would be to visit one of the five Synagogues north of the river for Yom Tov. Links to each of them are also accessible from this page.

His family are secular yet it is extermely important to them that I become Jewish, and over the course of the last year I have become interested in Judaism and also feel strong desire to convert. Conversion is a very challenging and big task to contemplate. It is also a journey that you would not be able to undertake without the support and committment of your fiance.

Going around Shules, particularly Friday night, is a good way of meeting people in the community.

Last year unfortunately, Dad missed lighting a Yarzheit candle for Mum and with the anniversary of my mother’s death fast approaching, I don’t want this to happen again this year. I’ve done a search and I understand the Yarzheit date in 2010 is 20/02 (6 Adar). It was suggested to me that I get my mother put on ‘Yizkor’ but I don’t understand this. What do I do, who do I go to and what does it involve.

Firstly, let me offer condolences on your loss.
With regards to a Yarzheit list, are you a member of any Shules? PHC has such a list, for example (as do all Shules) which you can have your Mother’s name added to, and on the day, the Rabbi will say Kaddish for her. I do not know if the list is limited to members – I don’t think it is (but it might be).
If she is added to the Yitzkor list, her name will be read out on days when Yitzkor is recited, such as 2nd day Yom Tov.

Thanks also for your message. Quite often the MZH will organise a minyan for a yartzeit. Alternatively a hazkara (memorial prayer) can be recited on a shabbat preceding the yartzeit. Rabbi Coleman guides the shule services at the home, and is quite often assisted by a number of people. I suggest calling the MZH reception and asking to speak to the person who coordinates the Synagogue services, I’m sure they will be able to help.

I’m not a young person but I’m vitally interested in learning everything I can about Judaism and have spoken to a Rabbi who I met through a friend and he said that I am considered Jewish. My problem is that I live in the country and getting to the northern suburbs where all the Jewish activity seems to be is a very difficult proposition on a regular basis. Most other religions have discussion groups and meetings often in people’s homes for this purpose and I was wondering if there was anything like that available to people in the southern suburbs so that I could learn all the things I need to know about Judaism. I already have quite an extensive library on the subject but meeting Jews and becoming familiar with the customs would be wonderful. Thank you.
Hi Christine,
Through the nature of Judaism, Shabbat and Kashrut, all institutions and homes tend to be within walking distance of one another and as such, there are no Jewish facilities outside of the one area, north of Perth.
There may well be Jewish people living south of the river but they are unlikely to be observant in any way, shape or form (although there are observant Jews in Albany).
The Perth Hebrew Congregation has classes on weeknights for people who want to reconnect to their Jewish roots; even if only a little and range from beginner upwards. Contacting the office there would be a good start.
If this is simply too far to travel on a regular basis, then the best thing you will probably find for regular contact would be Internet based; as there are many such groups online. There are of course many events as well, which may be worth the longer trip.
As Pesach is fast approaching and the Pesach Seder is the most Jews connect to – even the most unconnected Jews – you may wish to see about attending a Seder (this is the traditional Passover meal). I believe there is often one held in Fremantle, although I am not aware of the details such as time or place.

A lot depends on which side of your family your great grandmother is from. If it is a direct maternal descendency then you are considered in halachic (Jewish legal) terms already Jewish. In that instance your journey will involve connecting with your heritage.
If the link is a paternal one it does not discount you from learning about Judaism and Hebrew. However if the interest led you to take your learning further you may be in a situation where you wanted to pursue a conversion to Judaism.
Many of Perth’s Synagogues run educational programs and classes. I suggest pursuing their websites and perhaps visiting a Synagogue or two. I would also recommend obtaining several books to read about Jewish principles in general.
You can obtain books from the Perth Hebrew Congregation bookshop, or online from Gold’s bookshop on http://www.golds.com.au/ under the basic Judaism category in the books section. Some of my favourite books are:

I don’t know a lot about student accommodation but I am sure a lot of people here can help you with accommodation near ECU (which one, btw).
Student accommodation isn’t a big thing in Perth as most people don’t “go away’ to uni here – the unis are all within a short drive of each other and inside the greater Perth area. As such, students tend to live with their parents or in very small, on campus units or just in normal rentals.
The AUJS will probably be more help than me in answering your direct questions and I am sure one of them will read this site soon enough.

And am also looking to meet israeli people in perth to talk to about such prospects and the process needed.
I have also been looking for a star of david pendant to wear to show my support for israel but have not been able to locate one and when I ask jewelers they treat me like it is a bad thing to ask for?
And would it be offensive for me to wear such a thing in the eyes of jewish people or israelis as I do not want to offend the people i want to help.

There is a difference between a circumcision, and a brit milah, so if your friend is Jewish and interested in a brit, that is an entirely different matter, and you would need to contact a mohel.

A lot depends on your circumstance. A brit is not the same as a circumcision. There are a number of mohalim in the communinty, but for brit milah it is best to make arrangements through a shule. If your enquiry is in the nature of general medical circumcision, then it should go through the health service.

My Mother happened to be a very close and best friend of Mrs.Stella Alhadeff (wife of Solomon Alhadeff)(who apparently passed away recently in London).

Our family with two children is going to migrate to WA from Lithuania as the state sponsored business migrants. Our application had been lodged more than a year ago and we expect to get the answer within nearest months. I am a secular Jew, yet my involvement into Jewish life in Vilnius has been rather significant and wasn’t limited by donations only. Together with Rav Chaim Burshtein we prepared and published a work of Rav Josef-Jusl Horovits “The Human Level” – so far the only Musar book translated into Russian.
I would like to find the connection with the Perth Jewish Community and hope to become a useful member of it before long.

Since I have never been there and at the moment am looking for a rental, I would like to have your advise on the suburbs of Perth and of which to avoid. My husband’s new office will be in Belmont and I am looking for a suburb that is not far of it. Also, where would most people in the Jewish community live?

Hope you travel well. The suburbs to target are: Yokine, Dianella, Coolbinia, Menora, Bayswater, Noranda, St Andrews and surrounds. Pretty much all the inner northern suburbs.
If you have not been in contact, I would recommend calling the Development Office at Carmel School that provide some assistance for new migrants. The community also has a facility to support short term accomodation on arrival.

Some people have advertised private Hebrew lessons. There are also classes run by some organisations. A good starting point would be to contact the State Zionist Council at the Jewish Centre in Woodrow Avenue. The Shlicha is called Maya.

I have just relocated to Perth, from Brisbane, Sydney and the UK (long story!). I have a ten month baby boy, my husband works in the mines, 7 on/7 off, and my family are in the UK. So I am keen to meet members of the Jewish community, particularly other Mums. Is there a Mums Group which takes place at any of the Snyagogues? I have been on the websites of the synagogues, and Carmel school, but haven’t found anything so far. We live in South Fremantle, but are happy to travel.

There are some programs run by the various Synagogues. Dianella Shule (BMWA) runs an event on Tuesdays called “The Weekly Parashah- My Parashah too on Women, Motherhood, Children and Family finding ourselves in the Parashah”. It is learning and discussing with coffee and cake and babies are welcome. Contact the shule office at Dianella Shule on 9375 8985. You could also contact the Jewish Centre and ask about the National Council of Jewish Women playgroup. I am not sure if this is still running, or what age the children are. The Perth Hebrew Congregation have a daycare centre which may also be of interest.

My name is Fiona and I have recently moved to Perth. I have two young children 3 y/o and 1 y/o. There father is not Jewish and I have not actively practiced since I was a child. I am very keen for my children to learn their cultrual background and hebrew. Is there any playgroups or other groups that I could join with my children (we are south of the river).

There will be a National Jewish Singles Weekend in Sydney from 5-7 August 2011.
Last year 300 people attended.
On Friday night there will be a singles Shabbat Dinner
On Saturday night there will be a singles Mixer
On Sunday morning there will be a brunch.
Last year people from all over Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania attended.

May 25th, 2011 at 4:16 pmThis is a response to the “new families” – Fiona / Emily. There are no fixed Jewish Playgroups in Perth. As most of the community lives in the Inner Northern Suburbs corridor most people have either attended the Carmel or the youth groups which means people have known one another for ages. The way people make these connections, without a overly religous commitment is through a variety of options.
You can send your child to Ruth Harp D/Care which is in Menora @ the PHC. There are a few “younger” womens groups using FB as a medium to connect – Chai Group NCJW, Maccabbi Social Club. Most of the shuls & temple run children services on saturday which are quite nice and easy going. Until a child is at Youth Group age or organised sports its hard to find connections. You will need to travel four hours north to Perth. The Chabad organise Seder in Perth and Fremantle and the PHC make a facility available.

There are some excellent online resources available. There are also some local Hebrew language activities on from beginners to advanced which are run by the community shlichim. Contact the State Zionist Council on 9276 8730 and they can help.

The best we can suggest is to try the Jewish Setup link in the links area of this site. This is locally based. There are a number of activities taking place in the next few weeks such as Yom Haatzmaut, Yom Hashoah, Hebrew Cafe etc etc. There are lots of new people at these events, so hopefully you can scout around and make new connections.
